Dr Howard Sandler
BDS, MSc. Dent. (Wits.), Cert. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (Tufts, Boston)
Dr Howard Sandler is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in private practice in Chatswood, Sydney. He is the Principal of the Oral Surgery Day Centre which provides treatment for all types of oral surgical procedures.
A major interest of his is dental implant surgery, and the main focus of any operation he performs is to be as minimally invasive as possible. This particularly applies to implant placement and wisdom tooth removal, procedures which can be potentially unpleasant, and quite uncomfortable afterwards. Experience and gentle technique minimise this discomfort and result in a better-than-expected experience!
More about Howard Sandler
As the son and brother of dentists, Dr Sandler always aspired to study dentistry and specialise in oral surgery. He obtained his initial dental qualification at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. After travelling and working in the UK he returned to his alma mater for further study where he earned a Masters degree, thereby achieving entry into the Tufts University specialty training program in the USA. He commenced an internship and residency at Boston Medical Centre culminating in Certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
He then relocated to Sydney together with his young family, with the hope of reuniting his internationally widespread siblings and parents (some of whom were living in Sydney) – which did in fact eventuate. In the mid-eighties Dr Sandler was appointed a Senior Registrar at both Westmead Hospital Dental Clinical School and the United Dental Hospital of Sydney (as they were then known); later temporarily heading the Department of Oral Surgery at the Dental Hospital. He accepted an honorary appointment to teach undergraduates in the Oral Surgery Department of Sydney University, and teaching being his passion, also mentored qualified dentists doing the University Graduate Program in Implant Dentistry (this from the time of its inception some twenty years ago), and he continues to lecture and examine for this Graduate Diploma course.
While working at the Dental Hospital he served a term as President of the NSW Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and was later the ANZAOMS representative on the Australian Day Surgery Council, appointed for the five years during which statutory guidelines for hospital day stay procedures were being formulated.
Private Practice: Whilst maintaining his part-time University appointment Dr Sandler embarked on suburban and City practices, these early on becoming too busy to manage both. He thus concentrated his energies on the North Shore practice to ensure the best possible service for his Chatswood CBD patients, always readily available to see urgent referrals promptly, which continues to this day.
The Oral Surgery Day Centre was a vision that became a reality in 1995, and was the first licensed and accredited surgical facility (by NSW Health and ISO respectively) to exclusively provide oral and maxillofacial services; it was purpose built for outpatient procedures, and to provide emergency oral surgical and facial trauma treatment in a safe and convenient environment. Also for routine surgical extractions (commonly wisdom teeth) and dental implants. Operating theatre protocols and sterility comply with Australian National Standards to ensure overall safety and optimal patient satisfaction. Specialist consultant anaesthetists attend the Day Surgery providing general anaesthesia and sedation when required; otherwise local anaesthesia alone (or with sedation) is administered by the surgeons for suitable cases, ie whenever such treatment is uncomplicated. Registered Nurses and support staff are always in attendance. The team – working together with the doctors- endeavour to provide an unsurpassed professional treatment experience.
